Press Release

(Woodland, CA) – Starting March 1, the Yolo County Central Landfill will be accepting for recycling old mattresses and box springs from residents at no cost.

The landfill has joined a growing list of Bye Bye Mattress recycling collection site participants accepting old mattresses and box springs from the public for free so that they might be recycled. Individuals may bring such items to the Yolo County Central Landfill, located at 44090 County Road 28H in Woodland, during the normal hours of operation (Monday-Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.).

Bye Bye Mattress is administered by the Mattress Recycling Council, a non-profit organization created by the mattress industry and certified by CalRecycle to develop and manage California’s mattress recycling program, a requirement of the Used Mattress Recovery & Recycling Act of 2013. Mattresses and box springs recycled through this program are broken up into four main components: steel, foam, wood and fibers, which are used to make new products such as carpet padding, steel products, filters and automotive insulation. The program is funded through an $11 recycling fee collected when a mattress or box spring is sold in California.

“The mattress industry has experimented for decades with identifying responsible ways to manage old mattresses and box springs,” said Ryan Trainer, president of the Mattress Recycling Council and the International Sleep Products Association. “A lack of convenient and no-cost collection options have been a persistent obstacle. Partnerships with solid waste facilities help Bye Bye Mattress make recycling used mattresses accessible and easy for California residents.”

“To align with objectives in Yolo County’s Strategic Plan, our landfill staff have implemented another valuable program to better serve our residents and the environment,” said Yolo County Planning, Public Works & Environmental Services Director Taro Echiburu. “This program will not only help reduce waste going into our landfill, it should also minimize illegal dumping along county roadways.”
