Dr. Mary Vixie Sandy was appointed to represent the 3rd district on the Yolo County Board of Supervisors by Governor Galvin Newsom on October 4, 2023. She is the first women to serve on the Board of Supervisors since 2010 and is the first woman to represent the third district which encompasses Woodland, Bryte, and Broderick.
Supervisor Vixie Sandy has spent her 30+ year-career as a policy leader working in higher education and government. In addition to her work on the Board of Supervisors, Vixie Sandy serves as the executive director of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the nation’s oldest independent standards board for educators. Previous positions she’s held have been at UC Davis School of Education, California State University Chancellor’s Office, and California Department of Education.
She holds a doctorate in education from UC Berkeley, a master’s degree in education from UC Davis and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Sonoma State University. Her professional focus has been on building the capacity of teachers, leaders, public schools and communities to meet the needs of California’s diverse student body.
In November of 2022, Dr. Vixie Sandy was recognized nationally for her contributions in advancing accomplished teaching when she was awarded the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards James A. Kelly Award. Notable past recipients of this award include President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Barbara Kelley, Edward Rust, Jr., Linda Darling-Hammond, Michael Kirst, Mary Futrell, Barnett Berry and Ron Thorpe.
Supervisor Vixie Sandy will prioritize water conservation and storage; services to the unhoused; and advancing diversity and equity. “I am deeply committed to this community. Yolo County faces serious issues including the need to improve water conservation and flood mitigation, to support housing and healthy working conditions, especially for the 8,000 to 10,000 farm workers who are a critical resource in our community, to preserve prime agricultural land and stay focused on efforts to support the unhoused in our community to secure shelter and services that help them stabilize and move forward with their lives.”

WOODLAND - Senator Bill Dodd, D-Napa, released the following statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom's appointment of Mary Sandy to the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, representing District 3.
"Mary Sandy is an accomplished, dedicated public servant, and I applaud Governor Newsom for a great selection in appointing her to the Yolo Board of Supervisors," said Senator Bill Dodd. "Gary Sandy left big shoes to fill, and I know Mary will be a tremendous county supervisor. She knows the community and has been so involved in so many different ways. I was a county supervisor for 14 years, and I couldn't think of anyone with a better set of skills and experience to hit the ground running representing District 3."
