Yolo County Health and Human Services has partnered with the Davis Waste Removal Company to offer an alternative to handing down unsafe car seats or throwing away car seats that are no longer being used.

REASONS TO RECYCLE YOUR CAR SEAT:

• Your child has outgrown the seat

  Check labels on the car seat for height/weight limits.

• The seat was obtained secondhand

  Yolo County’s Car Seat Program highly discourages obtaining car seats from yard sales or from unknown sources. Used car seats are often missing labels and manuals that can help with safe installation. Also, you need to know the history of the seat. Car seats are one time use only so if it has been in a crash it is no longer safe.

• The seat has expired

  Plastic can become weak and brittle over time especially sitting in the hot California sun! Check the back of the seat for an expiration date. It is typically six years from the date of manufacture.

• The seat has a recall

  Go to safercar.gov for a list of car seat recalls and contact the manufacturer if your seat has a recall for further instructions.

• The seat was in a crash

  Car seats are one time use only, if they are involved in a crash they must be replaced. Contact your insurance company, they should cover the cost of the seat. If you are in a minor crash refer to nhtsa.gov/recalls for guidelines on whether the seat needs to be replaced or not.

HOW TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF YOUR UNSAFE CAR SEAT:

1. Cut and Remove Straps            

 2. Remove Padding                                                      

 3. Write Unsafe on Shell           

4. Take Plastic Shell To A Drop-off Station
